Kesfeld

Discover the traces of the "Westwall" in the Islek on a tour through history. We hike the western loop and part of the eastern route, as well as a section south of Kesfeld. Hiking guide Albert Thiex explains the significance of the Westwall, built between 1936 and 1940, whose concrete humps dominate the landscape of the Eifel - a controversial defense system with a turbulent history.

Zemmer Grundsgraben Adventure Tour

This route requires some endurance. The start at the observation tower Rodt with the panoramic view over the Eifel is great. The trail partially runs along the "Premiumwanderweg" Eifelsteig. The hike is varied, there is a lot to see and discover as for example; parts of a reconstructed Roman wall, a former horse watering place, the "Kaiserlinde" and the "Heimatmuseum". Continue to the water staircase, which promises refreshment during the summer. Through a natural forest part, the path leads back across the Grundgräben to Schleidweiler. The small Kreuzwegkapelle (chapel), which rises on a hill, invites you to linger. Engaged citizens have lovingly designed the surroundings of the chapel.

Hiking trail Mertert 1

Cross the park, walk along the Syr, past a waterfall and arrive at the nature reserve `` Manternacher Fiels``. Now walk to the ruins of a former sawmill and pass the Mechelslay, to walk up a few steps and reach a breathtaking viewpoint. Continuing the trail by walking past the woodland named `Schlaufels`, now walking downhill, arriving at the Schlammbach creek. Now you have nearly reached the end of this trail, all that´s left is walking back to Mertert via the Widderberg.
