The first leg – or, of course, the final leg – of the Moselsteig Trail thrills with its closeness to nature, open landscapes and an exclusive view of the three countries as far as Luxembourg and France. The landscape constantly changes, and with the rustic forests and wide-open fields of the Saargau, offers a contrast to the vine-ranked Moselle Valley – in early spring the beautiful flowerage of the wild growing orchids add to these glorious sights. Of particular interest in this section of the trail are the so-called dolina, karstic sinkholes located close to the path, which provide impressive proof that the landscape was mainly formed from limestone. Perl and Palzem are two charming legs of the trail for hikers – one still lies in the Saarland and the other already in Rhineland-Palatinate.
