Newel

The municipality of Newel consists of the districts of Newel, Butzweiler, Lorich, and Besslich.

As part of an administrative reform, the settlements of Newel, Butzweiler, Beßlich and Lorich were combined to form the municipality of Newel.

Historically, the development of the municipality was influenced by its proximity to the old Roman road between Trier and Cologne, which promoted trade and commerce. Of particular note is the so-called Roman Long Wall (Langmauer), probably built around 370 AD, which enclosed a vast area of approximately 220 square kilometres. Today, a faithfully reconstructed section of around 25 metres in length can be visited in Butzweiler.

Of special tourist interest are the nearby, ruggedly romantic Butzerbach Valley, which is ideal for extended hikes, as well as the Roman copper mining complex and the quarry located there. The stones from this quarry were used in the construction of the Porta Nigra in Trier. The best way to discover all these attractions is along the premium hiking trail “Römerpfad” (Roman Path).
